Rapist Hanged, Justice to Nirbhaya Amaresh Patel LAW CRITIQUE Fri, Mar 20, 2020, at ,10:01 AM It was in 16th Dec 2012, 6 men brutally gang raped a 23 year old paramedic student on a moving bus in Delhi. They were Ram Singh (died in police custody), Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and the one was juvenile. Eleven days after the assault she was transferred to hospital in Singapore for emergency treatment but unfortunately died two days later. Since Indian law does not allow the press to public the name of rape victim, she came to be known as Nirbhaya. The struggle story of Nirbhaya does not symbolises a particular rape incident but became a symbol of women resistance to rape around the world. Justice to her meant justice to all. There were several resistance from lawyers of accused to stall the hanging of the four rape victim but the same was dismissed by Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court. The special bench of Delhi High Court comprising of Justice Manmohan and Justice Sanjeev Narula in the late night hearing at 12 AM rejected the petition to stall the execution. Subsequently, a writ petition was filed in Supreme Court at around 2:45 AM, 20th March 2020, challenging the rejection of the Mercy Petition. The special bench of Supreme Court comprising Justice R. Banumathi, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice A.S. Bopana dismissed the same and allowed execution of the 4 rape convict. The day shall be dedicated to all the women in want of justice.
