He sworn in as CJI on 18/11/2019 by President Ram Nath Kovind at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Chief Justice SA Bobde, aged 63, succeeds Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and he will serve as Chief Justice of India till April 23, 2021. Justices NV Ramana is next in line. CJI SA Bobde was born in Nagpur on April 24, 1956. He completed his graduation at SFS College Nagpur and studied Law at Dr. Ambekar Law College, Nagpur University in 1978. Justice Bobde was enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978. Justice Bobde belongs to a prestigious lawyer’s family. He is the son of former Maharashtra Advocate General Arvind Bobde and brother of veteran lawyer Vinod Bobde. He practiced at the Nagpur Bench and made appearances at the Principal Bench at Bombay, before practicing at the Supreme Court of India for over 21 years. He was designated as Senior Advocate in 1998. Justice Bobde was appointed as an additional judge of Bombay High Court on 29 March 2000. He was also appointed as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh in 2012 and elevated as Judge of Supreme Court in 2013. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of India on 18/11/2019. Justice SA Bobde is serving as chancellor of the University of Delhi. He is also serving as the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, both at Mumbai and Nagpur campuses. Important Judgements: He has been on several important benches such as the Puttaswamy case which held the right to privacy a fundamental right and the recent Ayodhya title dispute. He, along with Justice Indira Banerjee and Indu Malhotra, conducted the inquiry into an allegation of sexual harassment against CJI Gogoi.
