Whoever intentionally puts any person in fear of any injury to the person (or to any other), and thereby dishonestly induces the person so put in fear to deliver to any person Any property Or valuable security Or anything signed Or sealed which may be converted into a valuable security Commits extortion Theft is robbery if In order to commit the theft Or in committing the theft Or in carrying away or in attempting to carry away property obtained by theft, the offender, for that end voluntarily causes (or attempts to cause) to any person Death Or hurt Or wrongful restraint Or fear of instant death or hurt or wrongful restraint. Dacoity involves robbery which in turn includes theft or extortion. Where 5 or more persons conjointly- Commit Or attempt to commit a robbery Or are present and aid such commission or attempt- Every one of them is said to commit dacoity. Consent The offender takes without the owner’s consent. Extortion is committed by the wrongful obtaining of consent. Robbery is an aggravated form of theft or extortion. The offender takes without consent. There is either no consent or consent is obtained wrongfully as in extortion. Property Theft can be committed in respect of movable property only. Extortion can be committed in respect of both kinds of property movable as well as immovable. Robbery and dacoity may be committed in respect of immovable property if it is a form of extortion, not otherwise. Force In theft, the element of force does not arise. In extortion, the property is obtained by intentionally putting a person in fear of injury to that person or to any other and thereby dishonestly inducing him to part with his property. Force may or may not be used according to as ‘robbery’ or ‘dacoity’ is a form of theft or extortion. Number of culprits Theft, extortion or robbery can be committed by on person singly.
