As if he was preparing for his next case even in his death bed. Loved and most respected, eminent Supreme Court lawyer and former Union Minister for Law and Urban Development, former Chairman of the Bar Council of India, Ram Jethmalani breathed his last at 7:45am at his official residence in New Delhi. There was something in him, the spark and fearlessness that made him stand apart. With the maturity of his legal age, he crowned himself as advocate at the early age of 18 under Justice Godfrey Davis,contesting the rule regarding minimum age passed by the bar council of Sindh. He had fought several high-profile cases and had represented his client at his best since then. He came into picture from his first noteworthy case in KM Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra, 1959 with Y.V. Chandrachud, later who became Chief Justice of India. Other prominent cases included the defence of Rajiv Gandhi’s killer in Madras High Court in 2011. He defended Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh in stock market scams. He defended the death sentence to Afzal Guru and represented Manu Sharma in the Jessica Lall Murder Case. He also defended Lalit Modi, former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman and commissioner in scam case. Subrat Roy in Shahara-SEBI Case, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in defamation case against Arun Jaitley. He was elected as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association due to his profound knowledge in law. In 1977 he received Human Rights Award instituted by World Peace through Law for his fight against authoritarianism at Philippines and Awarded International Jurist Award in 2016. He will be always remembered and be an inspiration for entire legal fraternity.
