DISHA GUPTA News Updates Mon, Mar 25, 2019, at ,12:29 PM Pramod Sawant, former speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly and BJP MLA from Sankhelim in the North Goa was sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of Goa, succeeding Manohar Parrikar, who died on Sunday after a prolonged battle with advanced pancreatic cancer. He took oath along with ministers in his 12-member cabinet that included his two deputies at 2 a.m. The nine other ministers are Manohar Azgaonkar, Rohan Khaunte, Govind Gaude, Vinod Palienkar, Jayesh Salgaonkar, Mauvin Godinho, Vishwajit Rane, Milind Naik and Nilesh Cabral. The new government has two deputy chief ministers, Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party MLA Sudin Dhavalikar, from the two small parties backing BJP in the coastal state. The switch by the two MGP lawmakers pushes the number of the BJP and its allies to 20 in the 40-member assembly and ends the Congress's claim of being the single largest party. Four seats are vacant after the death of two BJP members (including Manohar Parrikar) and the resignation of two Congress lawmakers. Michael Lobo, currently the deputy speaker, will be speaker till a new one is elected. The new CM said the party had given him a huge responsibility, and gave credit to Parrikar for his rise. He added that whatever he is today is all due to Manohar Parrikar. It was he who brought him into politics. He became the Speaker and the CM due to him. He said all tgis after he met the Governor. Pramod Sawant has said that he will prove the majority at the floor of the Goa assembly tomorrow. Thus, a floor test will be held in the Goa assembly tomorrow. A floor test is a motion through which the government of the day seeks to know whether it still enjoys the confidence of legislature. In this procedure, a CM appointed by the Governor can be asked to prove majority on the floor of the Legislative Assembly of the state.
