Supreme court granted Interim Bail to 13 Prisoners who were in Jail from 14 to 22 Years to all the Juvenile Admin Fri, Jul 09, 2021, at ,02:14 PM The Supreme Court granted interim bail to 13 prisoners who have been lodged in Agra Jail for periods ranging from 14 to 22 years, despite establishing that they were juveniles at the time of the offense. A bench comprising Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice V Ramasubramanain was ordered. Advocate Garima Prashad, appearing for the State of Uttar Pradesh, submitted that interim bail can be granted to the petitioners. Juvenile Justice Board’s order that The plea stated that Article 21 of the Constitution of India guarantees the right to life and personal liberty and prayed to the Apex Court to grant immediate release of the petitioners. This fact came to light in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) proceeding pending before the Allahabad high court in 2012 where it was said that a significant number of prisoners lodged in UP jails were below 18 years of age at the time of the commission of a crime. The high court called for a report from the director general (prisons) who confirmed this fact. In May 2012, the HC ordered an inquiry by Juvenile Justice Boards which resulted in orders being passed in the case of the 13 petitioners.
