What makes you successful: Remembering Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on International Student Day Amaresh Patel LAW AT A GLANCE Tue, Nov 17, 2020, at ,07:27 PM What makes you successful: Remembering Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on International Student Day 17th November, is celebrated as International Student Day across the globe to check on the situation of students, encourage them for their betterment and the society at large. The day gathered its importance due to devastating events of World War II which has led to development of cultural superiority, violent thoughts, and narrow understanding of nationalism. Today, on 17th November, on International Students Day, when we are thinking of development and welfare of students, how can we forget our most respected teacher, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Though he has achieved everything an individual can think of, an aerospace scientist, Director DRDO and ISRO, 11th President of India, also known as Missile Man of India and what not! But he always finds his peace in teaching. When he was asked in July 2015, “What he is planning to do after retiring as 11th President of India?”, he said, “My theater of action is many. Mostly involved in academy, research and teaching. India in 2020 will be a developed country and agriculture will still have great importance. So, for agriculture, agro-franchising and biodiesel, I’m working with GB Pant University for Agriculture and Technology. That is my theater of action. Then for rural development, I’m working with Gandhigram Rural Institute. For telemedicine, tele education, rural and urban tele connectivity, I’m working with IIT Hyderabad. I’m teaching, giving lectures, interacting, and some other mission. Then for technology and societal transformation, I’m working with Anna University, Chennai. Then for creative leadership, which you need for all the work around, I’m working with IIM Ahmadabad. Then for Nano Science and Nano Technology, which is going to become big revolution in 2020, I’m working with Banaras Hindu University. Next area, I’ll be working for saving millions lives. There is an organization Emergency Management Research Institute, Hyderabad. The mission is saving millions lives. I’m distinguished professor there….” When he was pointed out on, “It has been said that 75% of India’s Engineering Graduates are not immediately employable, that 85% of non-engineering graduates are not immediately employable that they have to go through retraining and it is now being said that as the Indian economy moves ahead, one of the things which we really lack, which may be a biggest crisis is trained human capital. While we want India to be knowledge super power, we aren’t developing our infrastructure, and curriculum enough in the right direction?”, He said, “We have certain types of Institution, such as IITs, IIMs, unit of science, they give one type of ready-made people going through different software and hardware development. We have 300 universities, they are very good universities also, but when 3 millions graduates come out of 300 hundred universities, they should be trained as a employment generators, rather than employment seekers. That’s why I’m asking the universities to change the syllabus, to carve a six months syllabus, specialized in giving them what specifically they want from the course. So that when these 300 millions comes out of these universities, they may start their enterprises and create employment. That way, India can be super power.” In an event organized by Asianet News Edufest with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for interaction with students and sharing his wisdom, when a student named Gayatri Mohan wanted to ask him a question, she started, “Sir, my question to you is, A journey from Rameshwapuram to Rastrapati Bhawan, is indeed a great achievement, which no one can think of…” Dr. Kalam humbly interrupted and said, “you are giving a lecture, what is your question?”, he smiled. The crowd fell with laughter. She continued after a break, “Sir, I would like to hear from you, a few tips from upcoming generation, to succeed in life.” Dr. Kalam, though he was really a personality only few could think of, he never let it become a part of his conversation. Dr. kalam replied, “Well, succeed in life, I’ve already told you, you have to do four things, Okay? Number one is, I’ll have great aim.” He smiled, “repeat it” he asked. “I’ll have great aim”, the girl continued with smile. “I’ll have great aim” he repeated it three times with girl so that she may never forget it. “I’ll continuously acquire knowledge” he said, with the girl to recite as a form of mantra. “I’ll do hardwork” both continued. “I’ll be persevere”, she said with him, “and, I’ll succeed”. The answer ended with encouragement. Applaud. I’m sure neither do she, nor do I will ever forget his line. I’ll have a great aim. I’ll continuously acquire knowledge I’ll do hard work and I’ll be persevere. And, I’ll succeed Keeping in mind the vision of Dr. A.P.J.
