About the National Human Rights Commission Internship

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is tasked with promoting human rights literacy and awareness as per Section 12(h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

To educate university students about the importance of protecting and promoting human rights, the Commission has been conducting internship programs regularly since 1998.

The Commission provides structured internship programs for university and college students to gain practical experience in human rights work.


Eligibility Criteria

  • Students who have finished their 1st year and are in their 2nd or 3rd year of the LL.B. (3-year program)

  • Students who have completed 3 years or Semester VI of the integrated 5-year law program and are in their 4th and 5th years

  • Students enrolled in an LL.M. program

  • Students pursuing a PG Diploma/MA in Human Rights, or postgraduate studies in Political Science, Sociology, Social Work (MSW), Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations, or any Social Sciences discipline (preference for final-year students)

  • Only students from regular courses at UGC-recognized universities are eligible

  • A minimum of 65% marks in Class XII and all following semesters

  • Age limit: Not more than 28 years


Mode of Internship

At the NHRC location in Delhi


Duration

  • Summer Internship: June to July

  • Winter Internship: December to January

  • A 4-week in-person program offering hands-on experience in the field of human rights


Stipend

₹12,000 + travel allowance (3rd AC train fare to/from the educational institute to Delhi)


Application Process

  1. Submit a 300–500 word Statement of Purpose (SOP) on: “Reason for Joining as Intern in NHRC” along with the online application

  2. Selection is based on:

    • Class XII – 30 marks

    • Graduation – 40 marks

    • SOP – 30 marks

  3. Preference given to candidates with research potential in human rights

  4. Students who have attended previous NHRC one-month summer/winter internships are not eligible
